The library digitises its oldest manuscripts

Nine hundred pages photographed so far, and the reading room keeps the originals under glass.

The city library has photographed nine hundred manuscript pages since spring, working through the collection in order of fragility rather than of age.

The scans go up as they are finished. The originals stay under glass in the reading room, which the librarian says is the point: fewer hands on the paper, and more readers on the text.
