The survey photographs the glacier for the sixtieth year
From the same rock, at the same hour: one and a quarter kilometres of ice have gone since 1961.
The survey party climbed to the same outcrop this month and took the same photograph it has taken every August since 1961, from the same rock and within an hour of the same time of day. Laid beside the first plate, this year’s shows the front of the glacier about one and a quarter kilometres further up the valley.
The series is what makes the number trustworthy: no instrument was changed, no viewpoint moved. Two students carried the plate camera up for the first time this year, which the survey says is the only succession plan it has.
